The epitome of beauty and elegance, this extremely showy, statuesque, herbaceous perennial yields an abundance of fragrant double blooms in late spring. The flowers are deep red to burgundy, with peek-a-boo golden stamens, and very large5 to 7 inches acrossbut they sit atop long, strong stems, so they rarely need staking and are perfect for cut-flower bouquets and fresh floral arrangements.
The hardy, clump-forming plant grows approximately 3 feet tall and wide with lush, deeply lobed foliageattractive throughout the growing season, even when not in bloom. But deadheading promotes a heavier rebloom. It grows in a broad range of climatic regions, Zone 3 through the northern parts of Zone 8. For best results, plant in rich, fertile, well-drained soil, in full to dappled sunlight. It prefers medium moisture but tolerates some drought once it is established. Cut the foliage to the ground in the fall after frost and cover root areas with mulch in winter.
With proper care, this long-lived peony will bloom year after year, possibly for generations to come.
