Description / Paeonia 'Rome' Patio Peony

Paeonia 'Rome' is a late-blooming peony with a compact form, only growing 24 inches tall—perfect for patio pots and small-space gardens. A prolific bloomer in late spring, it sets masses of frilly, fully double blooms with masses of lavender-pink petals and peek-a-boo yellow stamens—perfect for cut flowers. Borne on short, sturdy stems, the blooms sit perched above a bed of glossy, deep green leaves that stay lush and attractive throughout the growing season and often take on purple, rusty orange, or golden hues in fall.

Paeonia lactiflora, commonly known as Chinese peony or simply peony, 'Rome' is a robust, cold hardy, herbaceous perennial (Zones 3-8) that thrives for decades when grown in optimal conditions. It features a fast growth rate and an upright, bushy habit. 'Rome' is an exceptional choice as a specimen or accent plant and is recommended for, but not limited to, growing in a 6- to 10-inch pot.

'Rome' peony is easy to care for and grows best in sunny to partly shady locations with airy, nutrient-rich, moist, and well-draining soil. Afternoon shade may be helpful in warmer climates, and the plant should be protected from strong winds. Consistent watering is necessary, especially during hot weather, as the root should never dry out during the growing process. Fertilize each spring after new growth emerges to support this heavy feeder. Deer and rabbit resistant, this peony is a reliable addition to the garden.

In spring, plant 'Rome' peony root in a sheltered area, burying the entire root 1½ to 2 inches deep, or plant in potting soil, if container grown. Peonies need at least 8 weeks of cold wintertime temperatures to form buds. Warmer temperatures encourage root development, while cooler temps encourage shoot (eye) growth. To ensure all shoots develop, ensure cooling requirements. If grown in the garden, avoid planting near trees and shrubs to reduce competition for nutrients. Transplanting is not recommended, as peonies prefer to remain undisturbed.
