Description / Cestrum Night Blooming Jasmine
Cestrum Night Blooming Jasmine is a bushy evergreen shrub offering year-round interest, blooming repeatedly throughout summer. Opening at night, closing during the day, the slender, tubular, creamy white flowers are borne on gracefully arching stems and bloom in abundance, emitting a strong, sweet fragrance, enticing bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Clusters of small white berries follow, attracting birds.
A Cestrum nocturnum, commonly called night-blooming jasmine or the lady of the night, this woody plant has a moderately fast growth rate and a climbing, arching habit of pointed, glossy, dark green foliage, suitable for growing on a trellis or creating a screen or hedge. It's also a great specimen, container, and garden plant, nice in beds and borders.
Night blooming jasmine thrives in warm temperatures with high humidity and is sensitive to temperature changes. It grows best in sunny to dappled sun locations that are sheltered from fluctuating temperatures and protected from excessively hot summer sun. Night blooming jasmine prefers organic, fertile, moist, well-draining soil, having a neutral, alkaline, or acidic pH, but it tolerates a wide range of soils, including chalk, loam, and sand. The plant benefits from an annual feeding in early spring and pruning in fall, after flowering, which creates thick, compact new growth.
***Although the berries are edible to birds, all parts of this plant, including berries, are toxic to people and pets.
