Dahlia Giant Dinnerplate Mix contains dinnerplate dahlia varieties that grow to a mature size of 36 to 48 inches tall and set huge flowers from midsummer through fall, typically to first frost. Each random mix is a surprise. But all mixes promise lots of massive blooms with symmetrically arranged, brilliantly colored petals. And the more you cut dahlias, the more they bloom, so you'll have plenty of flowers to fill your vases as well as your garden. Dahlias are long-lived plants that you'll enjoy for years and years to come.

Giant Dinnerplate Mix contains clump-forming tender perennials (Zones 9-11) with an upright habit that works well in the back of garden borders and beds. The Decorative Mix varieties also make eye-catching accents or specimens, in garden or container. These tall plants may benefit from being staked or caged.

Giant Dinnerplate Mix varieties are easy to grow. They will thrive in sunny to partially shade locations with rich, porous soil that is freely draining. Add organic soil amendments, such as peat moss or ground bark, to heavy clays that drain slowly or to very sandy soils that do not hold water. Water thoroughly at planting and frequently while actively growing so that water reaches the roots. Fertilize dahlias in early spring and again in late summer and pinch them back when they reach 8 to 10 inches tall to promote bushy foliage and abundant blooms. Mulch plants to keep the soil cool and to prevent it from drying out. Divide dahlias in fall.

Plant Giant Dinnerplate Mix bulbs in warm spring soil after all danger of frost has passed, spacing tubers 12 to 36 inches apart and 3 inches deep. Dahlia tubers can also be started indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last anticipated frost date. Plant 1 Giant Dinnerplate Mix tuber per 5- to 8-inch pot filled with potting mix and place in a warm, sunny spot. Plant outdoors in spring after the threat of frost has passed.

NOTE: In Zones 3-7, the bulbs will need to be lifted before the first frost and overwintered inside, storing tubers at 50°F in dry peat moss or vermiculite. However, dahlias can be grown as annuals in all Zones.
