Description / Eucomis bicolor Pineapple Lily Bulbs
Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit
Eucomis bicolor is a unique, eye-catching garden specimen with floral stems that resemble miniature pineapples. This two-colored pineapple lily grows to a mature height of 8 to 12 inches tall and blooms in summer. Its erect, maroon-speckled stems rise just above a basal rosette of large, broad and wavy, strap-shaped leaves and bear a densely packed flower spike of star-shaped pale-green blooms with maroon margins and crowned with a rosette of leafy bracts. Fun and fragrant, the long-lasting flowers make exceptional cuts for mixed floral arrangements.
Eucomis bicolor, commonly called pineapple lily, is a tender perennial (Zones 7-10), native to South Africa, but it can be grown as an annual in cooler climates or the bulb can be lifted, over wintered, and replanted the next spring. Pineapple lily has a tufted habit and is at home in garden beds and borders, and grown Zone appropriately, it will slowly spread over time. But it also grows well in large patio pots.
Pineapple lily is easy to grow in a sunny to partially shady spot, with best flowering occurring in ample sunlight. It prefers rich, moist, freely draining soils. Water the plant deeply on a regular basis, never allowing the soil to dry out completely, and provide extra nutrients through the growing season by fertilizing it periodically.
Plant pineapple lily bulbs in spring after all threat of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Bury the bulbs 1 inch deep and space 18 inches apart.
