  • Description / Iris chrysographes Black Bulbs

Iris chrysographes Black is a Siberian iris that grows to a mature height of 18 to 20 inches tall and blooms in spring. Borne atop slender grey-green stalks, the exquisite, nearly black blooms have a velvety sheen and fine yellow veining on its falls. Lightly fragrant, the flowers attract pollinators to the garden, including butterflies and hummingbirds, and make excellent cut flowers for spring bouquets and mixed arrangements.

This Iris chrysographes, commonly called black chrysographes, is a hardy rhizomatous perennial in Zones 4-8. A great option for naturalizing, the plant returns year after year, creating dramatic displays when planted in groups in garden beds and borders, in wild gardens, and along the edges of ponds, but not growing in water. Black chrysographes also grow well in containers.

This iris grows best in sunny to partially shady areas with nutrient-rich, moist, well-draining slightly acidic soil that has a pH and holds enough moisture for root health. But it tolerates drier soils. Apply a layer of mulch in spring to retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and protect bulbs from frost in cold temperatures. Feed annually in spring with a nitrogen rich fertilizer for best results. Remove faded blooms immediately but wait until the foliage yellows and dies back before cutting it away.

Plant Iris chrysographes rhizomes in spring after the last frost, spacing them 4 inches apart and 4 inches deep. Upon receipt, soak rhizomes in water overnight to jump start growth.
