Description / Iris Picasso Dutch Iris Bulbs
Iris Picasso is a Dutch iris that can be planted in fall or spring and is often grown as an annual, especially in colder climates. In late spring, Picasso creates a colorful collage of grassy green leaves and large, sculptural flowers with patterned petals worthy of any garden canvas. With standards that show in shades of lavender and purple and golden yellow falls brandishing bronze brushstroke veins, each bloom is a work of art. Sitting atop 20-inch-tall stems, they make excellent cut flowers for floral arrangements.
An Iris x hollandica species, commonly called Dutch iris, Picasso is a bulbous perennial with a columnar upright habit. Dutch irises will naturalize easily in USDA Zones 6-8, creating lovely low-maintenance clusters in flower beds and borders that return year after year. Irises have the most visual impact when planted in large, sweeping drifts, but they also look stunning in patio pots.
Plant Picasso iris bulbs 4 inches apart and 5 inches deep. Or for broad sweeps of color, plant bulbs in large numbers, about 15 bulbs per square foot. Site bulbs in a sheltered, sunny to partially shady spot with reasonably fertile soil that drains freely. Keep soil moist, and never allow it to fully dry out in summer. Add a 2-inch layer of mulch in fall if growing in Zones colder than Zone 6. Once growth begins, feed bulbs with a fertilizer for bulbs. Picasso Dutch irises resist damage from deer and rodents.
Iris flowers are unique and hardy with different planting forms including rhizomes and bulbs, that make them easy to plant, divide, and multiply . Colorful options that include traditional purples and blues in addition to bi-colored varieties.
