  • Description / Rosa Malibu

Among the most splendid color combinations ever created, this blend of cream, gold, coral, and pink (with a cream reverse) is simply breathtaking as it seems to capture all the shades of the setting sun. The giant 5-inch blooms, comprised of 26 to 40 petals each, open slowly from attractive pointed, ovoid buds, releasing a subtle scent redolent of cinnamon and cloves as their petals unfurl from a high center. Exhibition quality, these blooms arise abundantly on perpetually-flowering, vigorous shrubs from early summer to late summer. Remove spent blossoms to encourage rebloom.

The shrub itself is a pleasure to see even when not in bloom. It has a lovely upright habit of glossy, dark green foliage and reaches a mature size of 5 to 6 feet high and around 4 feet wide.

Malibu performs best in medium-moisture, slightly acidic, well-drained loam in full sun. It should be pruned in the spring, to half height or 18-20 inches above the ground, with the removal of old canes and dead wood. Cut back canes that cross each other. Gardeners in warmer climates will want to cut the remaining canes by one-third, while those in colder climates will probably need to trim it a bit more.
