Description / Syringa Dwarf Korean Lilac Tree Form
Syringa Dwarf Korean Lilac is a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit winner and is now available as a tree. Grafted onto a stem or standard, Syringa meyeri 'Palibin' is a dwarf variety (one of the smallest available) with a bushy, rounded-oval habit of small, dark green leaves that turn reddish bronze in fall. Flowering from late spring to early summer, clusters of red-purple buds open to small, lilac-pink flowers. Sweetly scented, the flowers attract pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Syringa Dwarf Korean Lilac Tree is highly versatile in the garden and grows well in urban environments and city gardens. Long-lived, this lilac tree is a gorgeous specimen and fits nicely in small-space beds, borders, and landscapes. It's also a great container plant.
An easy-grow, easy-care tree, this Korean lilac tree grows best in a sunny spot with fertile, dry to medium moist soil that drains freely and has a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, but it adapts to a wide range of soil types, including poor soils. It tolerates drought and resists powdery mildew. Pruning promptly after blooming keeps the plant looking neat and increases blooms the following year.
The botanical name Syringa (suh-RIN-gah) is from the Greek word syrinx, meaning tube. Lilac stems contain a spongy pith which can be removed to leave a hollow tube that has traditionally been used to make panpipes.
