Description / Purple Majesty Potato - 2 Pound Bag
Days to Maturity: 75 to 100
Potato Purple Majesty is grown as a tuber vegetable. The oval-shaped tubers (potatoes) have uniform dark purple color, inside and out. A gourmet potato, they have a rich, sweet, buttery flavor; waxy texture; and a low starch content. They hold their color well when cooked and offer a particularly pretty plate presentation. Potatoes are a good source of dietary fiber, magnesium, and potassium. Purple potatoes are also packed with antioxidants, especially anthocyanin and carotenoids.
An herbaceous perennial, typically grown as an annual, Potato Purple Majesty is a member of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The medium-sized, semi-erect vining plant blooms in light blue flowers and produces 4 to 8 pounds of potatoes per plant. The tubers are resistant to second growth, shatter bruise, and many common potato viruses; but they have a shorter storage life compared to other Irish potatoes.
Potato Purple Majesty grows best in sunny locations with fertile, well-draining soil, having an acidic pH. For best texture and flavor, soils should be kept evenly moist until flowering stops. Then, cut water in half.
A cool-season vegetable, one of the first to be planted in the garden, potato can be direct sown into the garden in early spring 2 to 3 weeks before the last frost date. It needs cold temperatures to germinate and grow and tolerates moderate frost.
Created and owned by Colorado State University, Purple Majesty is plant variety protected.
