Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society
A southeastern Native Azalea, this flowering deciduous shrub blooms profusely in clusters of 3 to 7 flowers. Funnel-shaped, the snowy white flowers are often tinged pink and have elegant, long red stamens and stigma and a strong perfume of heliotrope.
The shrub is large, possibly the tallest and fastest growing of the US native azaleas, reaching up to 6 feet high and wide. The glossy green leaves are also large and turn deep red and purple in fall. The plant attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and birds.
