An instant classic from the moment it appeared, 'Sea Power' is one Tall Bearded Iris that no garden (or gardener!) should be without. It is the essence of the word "iris," incorporating the rich blue color, sweet fragrance, and ruffled form found in the very best varieties. Winner of every major Iris award, it is a superb cut-flower but also looks so good on the plant you may not have the heart to bring it indoors!

These huge blooms are simply breathtaking, with petals so perfectly, deeply ruffled they look as though they were done by hand! No other Tall Bearded can touch 'Sea Power' for ruffles. And they are fragrant, their strong, sweet smell apparent even in small numbers in the vase. Sea Power is what is called a "self" Iris, meaning that its standards (upper petals) and falls (lower petals) are the same color. They stand tall on 38-inch-high plants, and make excellent cuts for the bouquet.

'Sea Power' was introduced by noted Iris breeder Keith Keppel in 1999, and immediately began to rack up the honors. It started with a "modest" Honorable Mention from the American Iris Society in 2001. This was followed by the Society's top award -- the Award of Merit -- in 2003. Then it took the Wister in 2005 and, best of all, the Dykes Medal in 2006. Iris experts have no greater gifts to bestow on a variety!

Sea Power comes by its beauty honestly: it is the offspring of Irises Yaquina Blue x Jazz Me Blue. Yaquina Blue has won top honors as well, and gives 'Sea Power' its rich color. From Jazz Me Blue come the ruffles!

Like all Tall Beardeds, 'Sea Power' appears in late spring or early summer, depending on how far north you are and how sunny your weather is. It loves full sunshine everywhere but the deep South, and once established, it's quite drought tolerant. Deer and rabbits and other nibbling creatures leave it alone, and it's quite trouble-free, asking only to be divided into new plants every few years to keep the bloom strength up.

The Tall Beardeds make wonderful companions to Daylilies in the border, usually beating them into bloom by just a few weeks, and often overlapping delightfully. You will admire this lovely cultivar for many years to come! Zones 3-8.

A Tradition of Distinction

Wayside Difference Since its founding in 1920, Wayside Gardens has brought the rarest and highest-quality plants to the garden market. Wayside was founded in 1920 by two acclaimed growers who came together to pursue their shared vision of marketing all high-end plants for the serious garden enthusiast. Originally located in Mentor, Ohio, Wayside Gardens swiftly grew a reputation for the highest-quality plants and the most sophisticated clientele. In 1975, Wayside was purchased by the Park Seed Company, and moved to Hodges, SC.  The company has flourished since then, growing to become an undisputed leader in rare and unique plant growing.

Larger Containers & Well Established Root Systems

Tips for gardening in particularly hot, dry climates:

1. Water with a drip system whenever possible – soak the bed slowly and thoroughly to a depth of 10" to 12".

2. Watering deeply every 3 to 5 days is preferable to a shallow daily watering.

3. Water in the early morning, so foliage has time to dry.

4. Add a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch or similar material to aid in water retention and help keep the roots cool during hot weather.
