Description / Sedum 'Red Cauliflower'

Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit

Sedum 'Red Cauliflower' is an award-winning succulent that grows 8 to 12 inches tall and offers 3 seasons of foliage interest. Blooming in late summer through early fall, it puts on a magnificent color show as its large clusters of green buds spiral open into dainty, star-shaped flowers that quickly turn almost true red. Borne on dark purple-red stems, the flowers create a cool contrast set against the beautiful backdrop of thick, fleshy, dark grey-green foliage, which may blush with changes in temperature. The brightly colored blooms attract bees and butterflies to the garden and make excellent cut flowers for floral displays.

A Sedum telephium variety, commonly called stonecrop, 'Red Cauliflower' is an herbaceous perennial (Zones 3-9) with a mounded, spreading habit. It multiplies easily but is not aggressive—making it a great ground cover—and plants can be divided to control unwanted spread. 'Red Cauliflower' is a great specimen and container plant, but it is shown to best effect when massed or grouped in mixed beds and borders and is especially well-suited to rock gardens.

Cold hardy to Zone 3, reliable, and easy to grow, 'Red Cauliflower' stonecrop grows best in sunny locations with about any type of soil, as long as it is well-draining. Sedum 'Red Cauliflower' Stonecrop stores water in its leaves, so it tolerates drought and is good for arid climates or dryer soil conditions. It also tolerates heat and resists damage from deer.

Plant 'Red Cauliflower' roots in spring, placing them 18 to 24 inches apart and 1/2 inch deep.
