Description

A Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs variety, Spiraea Double Play® Dolly™ is a deciduous perennial shrub offering 3 seasons of interest, blooming late spring through summer. A unique color combination for spirea, purple flowers "pop" against bright yellow foliage. The foliage emerges with a flush of orange red in early spring before being smothered in flat-topped clusters of tiny flowers in late spring. The flowers have a slight, sweet fragrance and sustain pollinators, including butterflies and hummingbirds.

A Spiraea japonica, also known as Japanese spiraea or Japanese meadowsweet, Double Play Dolly is an all-around tough bush and a classic landscape plant. It has a neat, compact, mounded habit and makes a lovely specimen for beds; a great filler for a thriller-filler-spiller container garden; and an excellent choice for edging and borders.

Easy to grow, low maintenance, and cold hardy, spirea grows best in sunny to partly sunny locations with average medium moist, well-draining soils but tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay, except for very wet soils. Double Play Dolly is also drought tolerant and deer resistant. Blooms are borne on new wood, so any desired pruning should be done in early spring. Trim after blooming for a flush of colorful new growth and some rebloom.
