Description
Native to North America, western arborvitae is a versatile, easy-to-grow evergreen shrub that adds interesting structure, texture, and color to the landscape year-round. A natural pyramidal habit is maintained without pruning, and its sprays of glossy foliage are soft to the touch, have a distinctive braided look, and emerge yellow, giving the plant a halo effect, even in winter.
Don't expect this unique "fluffy" conifer to fade into the background because it definitely stands out in the landscape. And since it's resistant to wind burn, It's particularly well suited for use in hedgerows, borders, screening, and wind breaks. But its attractive attributes also lend themselves to specimen and foundation plantings.
Western arborvitae is considered more deer resistant than eastern arborvitae.
