Description / Tulipa Perennial Mix Tulip Bulbs

The Tulipa Perennial Mix is a multicolored wild tulip mix that contains many varieties and forms of species tulips, also known as botanical tulips. Species tulips have a small stature, growing to only 8 to 12 inches tall, which makes them perfect for growing as annuals in patio pots, and their bright crayon colors make lively cut flowers for uplifting mid-spring bouquets. But they perennialize and naturalize extremely well in Zones 3 through 8, returning and multiplying year after year, making them an excellent choice for planting in large sweeping drifts in the landscape. Of course, they also look great grouped or masses in beds and borders. Species tulips blend beautifully with other spring-blooming bulbs and planting several different varieties of tulips will provide consistent color until summer flowers begin blooming. Tulips work beautifully in any style garden, but they're a must-have for cottage, informal, and rock gardens.

Species tulips are cold hardy—to Zone 3—and super easy to grow and maintain. Tulips grow best in sunny to partially shady locations. Some light shade may extend their bloom time by keeping them cool, especially in warmer climates. Tulips prefer average to nutrient-rich, free-draining soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. When planting, be sure to allow adequate space between bulbs and plant them at the proper depth—4 to 8 inches apart and 4 to 8 inches deep. For robust flowering during the current season as well as the following spring season, feed bulbs with a well-balanced fertilizer, such as Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food, as soon as growth begins in spring. Remove spent flowers immediately but allow the leaves to turn yellow and wither before removing. In USDA Zones 8-10, refrigerate the bulbs for no less than eight weeks.
