Description / Vaccinium 'Sunshine Blue' Dwarf Blueberry

Popular for many years now, Vaccinium 'Sunshine Blue' Dwarf Blueberry has simply never been bettered as an ornamental edible. This southern highbush blueberry has a new look for every season, and the mass of sweet berries it produces in early to midsummer (June) is only the start of the story.

Spring begins with unusual pink blooms (most blueberry shrubs offer white) and glossy foliage on dense, rounded plants, just 3 to 4 feet high and wide. Perfect for containers, Vaccinium 'Sunshine Blue' Dwarf Blueberry is well-branched and full. When summer arrives, so do the berries—5 to 10 pounds from a single mature plant. And fall brings beautiful foliage changes, as red and purple mark the bright green of these semi-evergreen leaves.

Vaccinium 'Sunshine Blue' Dwarf Blueberry is self-pollinating (no second blueberry shrub is necessary) and very adaptable to a wide range of conditions, from the frigid winters of Chicago to the sweltering summers of Atlanta. It has a low chill requirement, making it a great choice for the South and West, but it is also very hardy in cold weather. Give it fresh potting soil each spring if growing in containers, keep it watered and fed, and Vaccinium 'Sunshine Blue' Dwarf Blueberry will reward you for many seasons to come.

Very prolific. The medium-sized fruits taste like a blueberry should; reminiscent of a wild blueberry. Bush is neat and compact, very attractive year-round.

My seven "sunshine blues" have been flourishing under a pine tree in my front yard for 7 or 8 years, with no additional care or fertilizer, under high, bright shade. The pink flowers are very pretty in spring in spring, the berries and foliage are beautiful in summer, and the little leaves turn bright red in the fall. The bushes have kept an attractive, regular shape, and bear an abundance of berries for us for 4-5 weeks in the summer. Over the years they have been admired and inquired after by anyone with the slightest experience in gardening. Even professional landscapers have noticed how unusual this variety is. I've recommended this specific blueberry bush to many many people, and have heard similar good reviews. I have a variety of native and non-native fruiting and flowering plants in my yard - this has been a great one.

Awesome plant!

bought 3 of these about 4 yrs ago. Planted them right beside my house. They are a very nice looking bush year round in south carolina (have pruned very little). Pretty much I just planted them and let them be, no special attention has been given them as far as watering or disease or bug prevention and only the once a yr fertilizer toss. Tons of berries. My mom had bought a few bushes from the local farm fresh market that were supposed to grow well in this area and they did so poorly that she is now purchasing theses, because she has seen how well they have grown, how good they look ornamentally and how much they produce. One of the best plant purchases I have ever made.
