Description / Zantedeschia 'Captain Fuego' Calla Lily Bulbs

'Captain Fuego' is a unique calla lily that really is unlike any other. Growing to a mature size of 18 to 24 inches tall, with a similar spread, this summer-blooming calla lily sets 5 or more flower stalks the first year. Set against a backdrop of gorgeous variegated, arrow-shaped leaves, each 2- to 3-inch, chalice-shaped flower exhibits varying shades of yellow, orange, pink and apricot. Long lasting, the multicolored blooms make colorful monofloral bouquets and uniquely interesting additions to mixed floral arrangements.

'Captain Fuego' is a species of the Zantedeschia genus, commonly called calla lily. Natives of South Africa, calla lilies are tender perennials (Zones 8-10), but in cooler climates, they are often grown as annuals or houseplants. 'Captain Fuego' callas are excellent specimen plants and grow well in a container, indoors or out, with 3 bulbs usually filling a 10- to 12-inch pot nicely. But calla lilies show to best effect when massed or grouped in beds and borders.

'Captain Fuego' calla lilies are easy to grow and virtually trouble free. They perform and flower best in sunny locations, but they will tolerate partial shade. In hot summer climates, they may benefit from full morning sun and some afternoon shade. Calla lilies adapt to a wide range of soils, but grow best in loose, organically rich, moisture-retentive, freely draining soil. Plant 'Captain Fuego' calla lily bulbs in spring after all threat of frost has passed, spacing them 18 to 24 inches apart and 5 inches deep, with the 'eyes' or growing points facing upwards. Water and feed calla lily plants regularly during the growing season.

'Captain Fuego' calla bulbs may survive over winter in Zone 7 if heavily mulched, but they are only summer hardy, so in areas receiving frost in the winter, dig them up in fall to overwinter or treat them as annuals.
