Over half a century after its introduction in 1951 this pristine Peony is still the reigning champion of its kind. As if eager to please its many followers, this inspiring flower blooms earlier than most and gives of a radiance that is simply unparalleled. Ample single flowerheads of purest white span up to 8" across and have almost a heavenly golden glow at the center of its profusion of petals. Like all Peonias Charlie's White is quite long lived, pest free, and make excellent cut flowers and everlastings. The reason deer, rabbits and other pests don't bother it is because of its high phenol content. While these bulbous perennials bloom from Spring to Summer, you can enjoy the beauty of its foliage all year long as it hosts reddish leaves in early spring and bronze/purple foliage for fall.

Charlie's White is a sun-loving perennial that needs well-drained soil to thrive. If you're like me and can't have just one Peony, be sure to space them well giving them about 3 to 4ft of breathing room. If you live in a climate with severe winter weather, make sure the eyes are 1 to 2 inches below the surface of the soil (and top with mulch). In warmer areas, cover with an inch of soil and mulch lightly for winter. Our Peonies are sold in Bareroot form with at least 3 to 5 growing eyes. Zones 3 to 8.

Planting:

Space plants 3 ft apart in full sun or light shade, the latter being preferable in southernmost zones. The ideal soil is rich and moisture retentive, but well drained.

When planting, set the root clumps in the hole so that the “eyes” or growing points are covered with no more than 1-2 inches of soil. Do not plant too deeply or your peony will not prosper.

Maintenance:

It is vital that these plants be kept well watered during their growing season. As peonies are heavy feeders, fertilize each spring with a high phosphorous fertilizer after growth has started. When cutting, remove as little foliage as possible, since the leaves are necessary for plant growth and vigor.

Remove spent flowers and, in the fall, cut back dead foliage. Established plants prefer not to be moved. In situations exposed to heavy winds, staking or a plant support hoop may be necessary.

A Tradition of Distinction

Since its founding in 1920, Wayside Gardens has brought the rarest and highest-quality plants to the garden market. Wayside was founded in 1920 by two acclaimed growers who came together to pursue their shared vision of marketing all high-end plants for the serious garden enthusiast. Originally located in Mentor, Ohio, Wayside Gardens swiftly grew a reputation for the highest-quality plants and the most sophisticated clientele. In 1975, Wayside was purchased by the Park Seed Company, and moved to Hodges, SC.  The company has flourished since then, growing to become an undisputed leader in rare and unique plant growing.

Unparalleled Selection

Wayside's horticulturists travel the world in search of new and unusual plant cultivars and proudly offer the garden industry’s most sophisticated selection of high quality and rare perennial plants, bulbs, trees, shrubs, roses, vines, and indoor plants. Throughout our history we have had the pleasure of introducing numerous exotic foreign and domestic plant cultivars to the American garden market. The Wayside collection of new and exclusive plant products is so preeminent that the catalog has long been lauded in the industry and is even used as a reference work in horticultural schools.
