Wilhelm Schact Daphne
Daphne x rollsdorfii 'Wilhelm Schacht'
First in spring and then again in early summer, masses of magenta-pink to plum-purple blooms appear in great clusters above small, rounded, glossy green leaves. Wonderfully fragrant, they fill the garden with a rich scent you will anticipate with delight each year.
Plant Wilhelm Schacht near benches and paths in the garden, and beneath windows -- anywhere you know you will be at close range with that incredible fragrance!
Petite yet very full and well-branched, this evergreen shrub is tidy and symmetrical, needing no pruning. And that's a good thing, because it flowers first on old wood (spring) and then again on new growth (summer), so if you do have to trim it, prepare to sacrifice a season of flowers. The foliage stays fresh and green throughout winter, adding to Wilhelm Schacht's appeal.
This shrub reaches only 18 to 24 inches high and wide, yet it has a much larger garden presence than its size would indicate! Vigorous and mounding, it is a happy cross of D. collina x D. petraea. Give it full sunshine and very rich, well-drained soil for best flowering. Highly recommended. Zones 6-9.

As the deer population has boomed and
food has become scarcer, they have become more aggressive. In some areas deer will
strip your garden bare, leaving nothing green or flowery behind. While there is no such thing as a completely deer-proof garden, there
are some effective things you can do to protect your garden from these
Use physical barriers
A High Fence
Deer can jump pretty high, but a fence higher than eight feet (higher on an up-slope) and flush with the ground will keep any deer out.
They are a much easier and less expensive solution. Deer generally will not try to jump electric fences, but will rather try to climb through the wires, receiving a deterring shock.
An even less extreme physical option is to put bird netting over your larger and more susceptible plants.
Plant Deer-resistant VarietiesHerbs, some conifers, and many flowers are some of the best deer-resistant plants. More fragrant plants will often deter predation. Planting just a few deer-resistant plants will limit grazing of your other plants. Remember, "deer-resistant" does not mean deer-proof. A hungry animal will eat just about anything.
Having a dog In the FamilyOwning a dog, especially a big dog will almost always keep deer from approaching your home. Just the scent of the dog will keep most deer away, and if your dog lives outside you will probably never see any deer.
For most gardeners, it is a combination of different solutions that works best. Every gardener has to find the solution that works best in their garden.
Site plants to allow for ultimate growth, choosing a soil with good drainage; often a sandy or gravelly soil will work best, with humus well worked in. Light shade in southern areas and a location where plants can establish a cool, moist root run, with protection from the strong winds of winter are ideal.
Daphne odora needs shade and is essentially a woodland or shady garden plant. Other species prefer full sun in the North, light shade in the South.
Do not move plants once they are established. During periods of drought, water well (but do not fertilize); a summer mulch will help plants to conserve water and keep root zone cool.
In colder regions, we recommend a coarse winter mulch of evergreen boughs. Daphnes rarely need any pruning. An annual top dressing of leaf mold or well decomposed organic matter is beneficial.
