  • Description / Allium Mount Everest Ornamental Onion Bulbs

Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit

Plant Allium Mount Everest ornamental onion bulbs before the first frost in fall, and late the next spring, it produces 4-inch spherical flower heads tightly packed with starry pure white florets atop slender scapes. These tall ornamental onions rise to 30 inches high, adding a bold architectural element to the garden, even after the flower heads go to seed. And the nectar- and pollen-rich flowers provide sustenance for bees, butterflies, and many types of beneficial pollinators. But the blooms are excellent cut flowers, making impressive bouquets and modern additions to mixed floral arrangements.

An Allium stipitatum species, commonly called ornamental onion, Mount Everest is a bulbous perennial with an upright habit. Although alliums are in the same family as garlic, onions, chives, and shallots, they have beautiful blooms that add interesting shapes, colors, and textures to flower beds, mixed borders, and patio pots. Mount Everest allium is a good naturalizer, which is perfect for planting in drifts in a wildlife garden. But it works wonderfully in any style garden, from contemporary to cottage gardens, and it's a great option for layering with muscari and anemones in a lasagna bulb planting, in garden or container.

Plant Mount Everest allium bulbs 12 to 16 inches apart and 7 to 8 inches deep and water well to settle. When growth starts to appear, feed bulbs with organic bulb food. Choose a sheltered site with plenty of sunshine and medium moist soil that drains freely. Avoid damp sites and amend heavy soils before planting. If flower production decreases over the years, dig, divide, and replant the bulbs. Ornamental onions are deer resistant, and Mount Everest is cold hardy to Zone 4.
