Description / Papaver 'Ruffled Princess of Orange' Poppy
'Ruffled Princess of Orange' Poppy is a fairly new poppy that grows 18 to 24 inches tall and blooms prolifically in spring in southern regions and in summer in northern regions, setting large, showy blooms. Set apart by their satiny, ruffled petals surrounding a dark seed capsule, the fringy dark orange flowers simply "pop" against a backdrop of thistle-like gray-green leaves that give the plant an airy appearance. Borne singly on long, bristly stems, the flowers beckon bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds but also make cheerful cut-flower bouquets. Harvest blooms just as buds begin to open and sear the ends of freshly cut stems with a match.
A Papaver orientale cultivar, commonly called oriental poppy, 'Ruffled Princess of Orange' is an herbaceous perennial (Zones 2-9) with moderately vigorous growth and an upright, columnar habit. Although the clumps will increase in size each year, they are not invasive. Group or mass plant these oriental poppies in beds and borders. Poppies can also be forced indoors with special treatment.
Oriental poppies are cold weather plants that prefer the cooler temperatures of spring and fall. South of Zone 7, they may struggle in the summer heat and humidity. 'Ruffled Princess of Orange' is more tolerant of heat than most and stands up well to wind and rain. The plant grows best a sunny spot with organically rich, medium moist, freely draining soil. But it grows well in average and even poor soils; however, it hates wet feet and will not tolerate soggy conditions. Although 'Ruffled Princess of Orange' is cold hardy, adding a layer of mulch or pine needles for winter protection may be beneficial in Zones 2 to 6. After flowering, allow poppies to die back during the summer and stop watering the plants, as excess watering will kill them. The plants are deer resistant.
Plant 'Ruffled Princess of Orange' poppy roots in spring, spacing them 12 to 18 inches apart and 1 inch deep. Choose placement carefully because they don't like to be disturbed once established, and you may lose a full blooming season if moved. If they must be moved or divided, do so in fall.
