  • Description / Narcissus Mammoth Paperwhite Bulbs

Paperwhites are the all-time favorite flowering bulb for forcing and growing indoors, since they are reliable and require no cold exposure, special handling, or treatment. But Mammoth bulbs are so large they should be spaced further apart than normal. Once potted, the bulbs bloom in about 4 to 6 weeks, setting clusters of wonderfully fragrant white flowers. Each bulb typically produces 3 to 4 long, slender stems that rise to a height of 12 to 24 inches tall. Paperwhites can be grown in a pretty patio pot, but they grow equally well in water and make a stylish statement when anchored by pebbles or stones in a clear glass vase.

Mammoth is a Narcissus papyraceus variety, which is commonly called paperwhites, and can also be grown outdoors, where the fragrant flowers will draw in butterflies and hummingbirds. Paperwhites are often grown in containers but can be planted in the garden, like any other narcissus. Plant the bulbs in fall before the first frost, and they will bloom in late winter or early spring, depending on climate. They may naturalize in optimum conditions and given adequate space, sunlight, water, and fertilizer. Paperwhites look their best when planted in groups or masses.

Mammoth paperwhite is a bulbous perennial that's easy to grow and maintain. Paperwhites grow best in sunny to partly shady locations with rich, fertile, well-draining soil having a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0-7.0). Water paperwhites during the growth period, but keep in mind, bulbs do not like soggy soils. When planting Mammoth paperwhite bulbs, allow adequate space between bulbs and plant them at the proper depth—6 to 8 inches apart and 6 inches deep. For robust flowering during the current season as well as the following spring season, feed bulbs with a well-balanced fertilizer, such as Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food, as soon as growth begins in spring. After flowers bloom, allow foliage to die back naturally and cut back once fully faded. Mammoth paperwhites are relatively pest-free and deer resistant.
