  • Description / Hydrangea Early Evolution® Panicle Hydrangea

Hydrangea Early Evolution® is more compact than most panicle hydrangeas, only growing to approximately 2+ feet tall and wide, fitting nicely in a small urban garden or in a pretty patio pot.

Early Evolution hydrangea begins setting buds as early as late spring and continues to be covered in blossoms until fall. The large, showy flowers appear in unique flattened softly colored clusters that continually change color throughout the season, giving the shrub a lacy, multicolored appearance. Originally lime-white, the flowers soon become pure white, and as summer progresses, they begin to blush salmon pink until finally turning dark pink in fall.

A Hydrangea paniculata, commonly called panicle hydrangea, Early Evolution has a very compact, freely branching, and bushy habit that can easily be tucked into small spaces alongside a mix of perennials or mass planted in mixed beds and borders. It's an absolute must-have for a cutting garden.

Early Evolution hydrangea grows and flowers best in sunny to partially shady spots with moist, well-draining soil; but panicle hydrangeas tend to tolerate more sun and drought than other hydrangeas. Morning sun and afternoon shade typically works best, especially in the South. A tough, easy-care shrub, panicle hydrangeas also resist pests and disease.

Discover tips to ensure your hydrangeas thrive, from soil preparation to pruning techniques, by following our expert advice on the Hydrangea Planting and General Care Guide and the How to Prune Hydrangea Plants blog.

Under the right fall conditions, some panicle hydrangeas can blush pink or red. The magic happens when cool nights meet the right genetic traits. In warmer zones, the color may stay closer to white, but the effect is gorgeous either way.
