  • Description / Dahlia Decorative Mix Bulbs

Dahlia Decorative Mix contains decorative type dahlias that grow between 36 to 48 inches tall and offer huge blooms. Each random mix is unique but is guaranteed to contain lots of color and variety. Dahlias also offer a lot of bang for your buck and pay high rewards for very little effort, giving you tons of exotic flowers to fill your garden and vases from midsummer into fall, often to first frost. And the more you cut, the more dahlias bloom. But harvest the blooms when they are almost fully open because dahlias don't open much after being cut.

The Dahlia Decorative Mix contains clump-forming tender perennials (Zones 9-11) with an upright habit. They can be grown as patio pot plants but look their best when grouped or mass planted in garden beds and borders. These tall plants may benefit from being staked or caged.

Easy to grow, Decorative Mix dahlias grow best in a sunny spot with rich, porous soil that drains freely, yet still holds enough water for the roots. Add organic soil amendments, such as peat moss or ground bark, to heavy clays that drain slowly or to very sandy soils that do not hold water. Water dahlias thoroughly at planting and frequently while actively growing so that water reaches the roots. To promote bushier plants with more blooms, pinch dahlias when they reach 8 to 10 inches tall, cut back some of the taller stems, and fertilize in early spring and again in late summer. Add mulch to keep the soil cool and to prevent the soil from drying out. Divide dahlias in fall.

Plant Decorative Mix bulbs in warm spring soil after all danger of frost has passed, spacing tubers 12 to 36 inches apart and 3 inches deep. Or start dahlia tubers indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last anticipated frost date. Plant 1 Decorative Mix tuber per 5- to 8-inch pot filled with potting mix and place in a warm, sunny spot. Plant outdoors after temperatures moderate.

NOTE: In Zones 3-7, the bulbs will need to be lifted before the first frost and overwintered inside, storing tubers at 50°F in dry peat moss or vermiculite. However, dahlias can be grown as annuals in all Zones.

Dahlias come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. Dahlias are grown from tubers, which are similar to bulbs, so they're easy to plant.
