Description / Lavender 'Munstead'

Lavender 'Munstead' is a classic English lavender known for its impressive midsummer blooms and ability to handle heat and humidity well. This evergreen perennial is not just a stunning hedge; it also adds charm as a border accent and does exceptionally well in large containers. Whether you're looking to create a beautiful drought tolerant hedge or enhance your garden borders, this beloved heirloom is a perfect fit for your sunny, dry landscape.

Lavender 'Munstead' is a compact plant, reaching a height of 12 inches and spreading 12 to 24 inches wide. With its gray-green foliage and impressive bloom stalks, which can extend up to a foot long, this aromatic herb makes growing lavender perfect for creating sachets, potpourri, and more. The fragrant scent is released most strongly when the foliage is touched, making it a delightful addition to any garden. In midsummer, the plant bursts into masses of bright lavender-blue blooms, creating full, rounded, and long-lasting displays. The attractive flowers attract bees and butterflies in abundance. Known for its classic charm, Lavandula 'Munstead' aka Lavendar Munstead is not only great for fresh bouquets but also dries beautifully for everlasting arrangements.

Lavender is a versatile herb known for its essential oils commonly used in cooking. Lavandula 'Munstead,' while often chosen for its ornamental and aromatic qualities in gardens, can also serve as a source of lavender oil. This compact, well-branched, and industrious evergreen perennial brings many benefits to the garden, making it a valuable addition for various purposes.

Grow Lavandula 'Munstead' in well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil in a sunny location. Just like all lavenders, it thrives in soil that drains well and prefers to be on the drier side once it's established. This variety is quite resilient, tolerating heat, humidity, and drought well, making it an excellent choice for gardens in the U.S. For optimal performance, trim it back in spring to encourage fuller growth. Additionally, deadhead the plant after flowering to promote the development of new buds and blooms for the next season.

Lavandula has so many perks, it?s easy to grow, attracts pollinators, and its fragrance is known for its calming properties. Find expert advice on planting and care in our Lavender Care Guide.

I purchased this as a first time Wayside customer. The plant is not thriving at all despite proper care I wrote to wayside customer service to let them know, and never heard back I have since purchased a lavender plant from a local nursery, which is doing much better.
