Description / Mangave Art & Sol® 'Thunderbird'
A member of the Proven Winners® Art & Sol® collection, 'Thunderbird' is a compact succulent, reaching 8 to 12 inches tall and 10 to 12 inches wide. 'Thunderbird' mangave adds an exotic architectural element to garden or container with its upright, refined rosette of small, thick, and fleshy leaves that are slightly cupped and have small, firm marginal teeth and densely concentrated reddish mottling, which will be most prominent when grown in full sun.
A second-generation intergeneric cross of Manfreda x Agave, X Mangave 'Thunderbird' is a frost-tender herbaceous plant with excellent heat tolerance and drought tolerance coming from its Agave parentage. It has a moderate to rapid growth rate, which comes from its Manfreda background, and an upright, rounded habit that's highly versatile in the garden. A perennial in southern Zones (9-11), 'Thunderbird' mangave must be overwintered as a houseplant or grown as an annual in more northern Zones.
'Thunderbird' is a xerophytic plant that requires minimal water once established, so it is a good option for xeriscapes, rock, alpine, and waterwise gardens. However, it thrives in a wide range of moisture conditions and can be combined with annuals, succulents, and tropicals in a container, and it makes an exciting thriller in a mixed container garden. Whether as a solitary specimen or in a mass planting, 'Thunderbird' is a stunning addition to garden beds and borders and a good companion plant for agastache, ajuga, dianthus, iberis, lavandula, and sedum.
'Thunderbird' grows best in average to medium moist soil that's freely draining, but it tolerates heat, drought, and poor soils and will perform in those sunny, hot, dry or hard to water areas in the garden. It's deer and rabbit resistant. A one-time application of Organic Diehard™ Transplant Stress Relief will get your plant off to the best possible start.
Mangave 'Thunderbird' has native parentage, indigenous to arid and semi-arid regions of Central and North America. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
