  • Description / Asclepias 'Hello Yellow' Milkweed

Asclepias 'Hello Yellow' Milkweed is a native wildflower that grows 24 to 36 inches tall and freely blooms through summer, continuing into fall. 'Hello Yellow' is prized for its compact, bushy growth and vibrant, long-lasting flower clusters jam-packed with brilliant blooms in sunny shades of yellow. 'Hello Yellow' flowers provide a critical source of nectar for butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators; and its slender, lance-shaped leaves serve as an essential food source for monarch butterfly caterpillars. After the flowers fade, handsome seedpods appear, which are often used in dried floral arrangements and autumnal decorations.

Asclepias tuberosa species, commonly known as milkweed or butterfly weed, 'Hello Yellow' belongs to the milkweed family (Asclepiadaceae). These herbaceous perennials are hardy in Zones 4-9 and are unforgettable planted in large drifts across meadows and prairies. Despite their wildflower origins, butterfly weed's striking appearance and modest size make them ideal for butterfly gardens, native plant gardens, rock gardens, and modern landscapes, but it can also be grown in containers. Left undisturbed, milkweed self-seeds freely, making it perfect for naturalizing, erosion control, and creating vibrant flowering borders.

'Hello Yellow' milkweed is highly adaptable and requires minimal care once established. They perform best in sunny areas with average, dry to medium moist, well-draining soils. However, they are also well-suited to poor, dry, and unimproved soils and exhibit excellent drought tolerance. These plants are naturally resistant to deer and rabbits, further enhancing their value in the garden.

To plant 'Hello Yellow' milkweed roots, do so in the spring, spacing them 12 to 18 inches apart and planting them 1½ to 2 inches deep. Choose the planting site carefully, as butterfly weed does not transplant well.

A native species, milkweed (butterfly weed) is indigenous to the prairies and grasslands of the Midwest and Great Plains, stretching from Maine to South Dakota, the desert Southwest, and Florida. These native plants are not only visually stunning but also eco-friendly. Adapted to local climates and soils, they thrive without fertilizers or excessive watering once established. Additionally, they act as natural pest deterrents, reducing the need for pesticides. Using native plants in your landscape enhances biodiversity, supports pollinators and wildlife, and fosters a thriving, sustainable garden.
