  • Description / Caladium 'Pink Symphony' Bulbs

'Pink Symphony' is a small-stature lance leaf caladium grown for its ornamental, heart-shaped foliage that adds dynamic color and texture to shady spaces. Reaching a mature size of 10 to 12 inches tall, this delicate beauty produces slender, ruffled leaves that taper to an elegant point. An ever-changing symphony of color, the multicolored leaves display varying shades of pink and green depending on maturity and sun exposure, with each leaf unique. Although 'Pink Symphony' caladium may bloom throughout summer, the small, calla-like, light pink or white flowers, considered insignificant, are typically removed to conserve energy for more leaves and a bigger tuber.

'Pink Symphony' is a Caladium bicolor, commonly known as angel wings. A Brazilian species, this tropical plant grows naturally in open forest areas and along river banks. It thrives in the heat and humidity of Zones 10-11, where it grows as a tender perennial, but it will not survive in prolonged temperatures below 65°F. In cooler regions, it can be grown as a summer bulb or can brighten indoor spaces as a houseplant. Whether grown in beds, borders, hanging baskets, window boxes, or patio pots, 'Pink Symphony' shines when planted in masses or naturalistic clusters. Its dramatic leaves also make it an excellent centerpiece in mixed garden containers with other shade-loving plants.

'Pink Symphony' is a low-maintenance caladium that thrives in shady to dappled shade conditions, with best color occurring with some sun. And it tolerates more sunlight than other varieties, especially in cooler Zones. For best results, plant it in nutrient-rich, neutral to slightly acidic (pH 5.5-6), evenly moist soil, and water it regularly to prevent drying out. But make sure the bulbs are never oversaturated, which may cause them to rot. This heavy feeder benefits from some fertilization. Not only is it resistant to deer, but with proper care, this stunning plant will return year after year.

Plant 'Pink Symphony' tubers in spring after the last frost when the soil is warm. Position the bulbs 6 to 12 inches apart and 1½ to 2 inches deep, with the rounded side and "eyes" facing up. Alternatively, start tubers indoors in damp peat moss or vermiculite-filled pots, then transplant them outdoors once temperatures rise. Removing the main "eye" before planting encourages a more balanced, rounded growth.

In colder climates, dig up tubers in the fall, immediately after the foliage dies back or before frost hits. Store them in a cool, dry place where temperatures stay above 45°F. Bring container-grown plants indoors to overwinter and keep them protected from freezing temperatures.
