Description / Dicentra formosa
A native wildflower of Canada and the western United States, this bleeding heart produces small clusters of heart-shaped pink flowers that sit atop separate stems and weep over the fern-like, blue-green foliage. The blooms attract hummingbirds and make lovely cut flowers.
It has a mounding habit, growing 18 inches tall and wide, shown to best effect when massed or grouped; but its extensive rhizome systems also spread to establish colonies. Although quite cold hardy, western bleeding heart must be kept mulched with decaying humus, especially in cold winters.
