Description / Hibiscus 'Red Heart' Rose of Sharon Tree Form
Hibiscus 'Red Heart' is a winner of the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit, and now it's available in tree form. Grafted onto a 3-foot-stem, this tree grows to a mature height of 7 feet tall with a 6-foot-wide spread. 'Red Heart' has an upright, bushy habit of lobed dark green leaves and a long flowering season. Borne singly, the funnel-shaped bicolor flowers are simply dazzling with pristine white petals and a dramatic deep red eye.
A Hibiscus syriacus cultivar, commonly called rose of sharon, 'Red Heart' is a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub offering garden interest throughout the growing season. In this tree form, it works beautifully as a specimen, container, landscape, mixed bed or border plant. 'Red Heart' tolerates pollution, so it's a great choice for an urban setting or city garden.
An easy grow, easy-care plant, 'Red Heart' grows best in a sheltered spot with full sun, but it doesn't mind a bit of shade, especially in the afternoon; however, full morning sun is particularly beneficial. Rose of sharon tolerates a wide range of soil types, including chalk, clay, loam, and sand, having a neutral to alkaline pH, as long as it is kept moist but freely draining. The plant tolerates heat and humidity. Prune to shape in late winter or early spring.
