  • Description / Hosta Premium Blend Plantain Lily

Hosta Premium Blend contains multiple Hosta species, commonly called plantain lily or simply hosta, grown for their dramatic ornamental foliage. The varieties in this blend range in size between 18 to 36 inches tall and exhibit a diverse mix of leaf shapes, textures, patterns, and colors that can be blues, golds, greens, yellows, or whites as well as variegated, possibly speckled or striped. They typically bloom midsummer, when funnel-shaped, pale lavender flowers rise well above the foliage on long, slender scapes, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. The flowers also make nice floral bits in mixed arrangements.

Premium Blend hostas are long-lived, shade-loving perennials that are extremely hardy and grow in Zones 3-9. Hostas typically have a somewhat symmetrical, mounding habit. They grow rather quicky but can take years to fully mature, coming back each year bigger and better. Premium Blend hostas look their best massed, covering large swathes in a ground cover tapestry of varying foliage shapes and colors, or grouped into drifts that meander through the garden. But hostas are highly versatile plants. They also make excellent bedding, border, foundation, and container plants as well as nice edging. Hostas are excellent companions for spring-blooming bulbs, as they quickly fill in to replace the bulb's fading foliage. They are a must-have in woodland settings and look particularly lovely planted under large trees.

Known for their easy growing, easy going nature, hostas require little to no attention once they are established. They grow best in dappled to full shade locations with rich, moist, well-draining soil having a neutral to acidic pH, but they tolerate a wide range of soils. Plants should be watered consistently and never allowed to dry out. An annual application of a slow-release fertilizer will keep them looking their best.

Plant Premium Blend hosta roots in spring, spacing them 18 to 36 inches apart and 1½ to 2 inches deep.
