  • Description / Iris 'How Audacious' Siberian Iris

Aptly named, Iris 'How Audacious' is a unique Siberian iris that grows 24 to 42 inches tall and blooms early to midsummer, typically from June through July, after the bearded iris. Tall and graceful, each long, strong stem showcases several bicolored flowers that rise above a vase-shaped clump of narrow, arching, grass-like leaves, which retain their beautiful blue-green color into fall. The large, ruffled blooms are an extravaganza of color, featuring varying shades of reddish- and blue-violet, white veining, and yellow centers. These bold blooms are perfect for cutting and make stunning early summer bouquets.

An Iris sibirica variety, commonly called Siberian iris, 'How Audacious' is a cold-hardy perennial suitable for Zones 3-9. It spreads by rhizomes over time, so it's a perfect option for naturalizing in wild gardens or along the edges of ponds or water gardens, as long as they are not in standing water. But Siberian irises are also great for grouping or massing in flower beds and borders.

An easy-grow, moisture-loving plant, 'How Audacious' prefers a sunny to partially shady spot with moist, acidic soil; but it tolerates a wide range of soils, including dryer soil once established. It may appreciate some afternoon shade in hot summer climates, but too much shade will result in fewer blooms. Feed in spring with a nitrogen rich fertilizer and remove faded bloom stalks, both for garden appearance and to prevent unwanted reseeding. This Siberian iris is tolerant of deer but not deer resistant.

Plant 'How Audacious' roots in spring, spacing them 36 inches apart and 1½ to 2 inches deep. Upon receipt, soak your rhizomes in water overnight to jump start growth.
