  • Description / Iris 'Telstar' Dutch Iris Bulbs

Iris 'Telstar' is a famous Dutch iris that blooms in late spring. The stunning deep blue to royal purple blooms have a splash of yellow on its falls and rise above a clump of narrow, linear leaves to a height of 18 to 24 inches. Borne on sturdy stems, they make excellent cut flowers that are long-lasting in monofloral bouquets and mixed floral displays.

An Iris x hollandica species, 'Telstar' is a hardy perennial in Zones 5-9. In colder regions, it can be treated as an annual or the bulbs can be lifted and stored for replanting in spring. 'Telstar' iris is an excellent choice for naturalizing and creates a stunning display in garden beds and borders when planted in groups of 15 bulbs per square foot. They can also be container grown and forced throughout the year.

'Telstar' iris thrives in sunny locations with rich, porous soil that drains well yet retains enough moisture for root development. If your garden soil is heavy clay or excessively sandy, amend it with a 3- to 4-inch layer of peat moss or ground bark worked into a depth of 10 inches. While the plant is actively growing, water deeply and regularly to ensure the roots receive adequate moisture. Mulching with a 2-inch layer of organic material helps retain soil moisture, keeps the ground cool, and protects bulbs from frost in colder areas. Fertilize twice a year for optimal growth. Remove spent blooms promptly but allow the foliage to naturally die back before trimming. 'Telstar' iris is resistant to deer and rabbits.

Plant 'Telstar' iris bulbs in the fall in warmer Zones or in the spring after the last frost in cooler Zones. Space bulbs 4 to 6 inches apart and plant them 4 to 6 inches deep.
