  • Description / Matteuccia Ostrich Fern

One of the most popular hardy ferns, and one of the most majestic, Matteuccia struthiopteris is a tall, graceful plant that sets arching, vase-shaped fronds that resemble ostrich feathers. As the fronds mature, they spread at the tip, creating a lovely, finely cut canopy effect. The plant typically grows to about 36 inches tall and wide, but it can get much larger in optimal conditions. Widely grown in Victorian gardens, ferns are enjoying a renaissance in popularity. Gardeners are becoming aware of how easy to grow and elegant this graceful fern is, and few plants impart such a light, airy, cooling effect in the landscape, or provide such a range of foliage textures for the garden.

Matteuccia struthiopteris plants, commonly called ostrich ferns, are of northern ancestry for extra hardiness (Zones 4-9), and they perform better and better with age, spreading quickly over time to form large, glorious colonies. Ostrich ferns are an excellent choice for wet areas along ponds and streams or in woodland gardens, wild gardens, water gardens, or in bogs.

Ostrich fern is easy to grow, even in the dappled shade of a southern woodland setting. It thrives in a light, highly organic soil, with ample moisture during their growing season, particularly as the plants are becoming established. Most prefer shade or partial shade but grow in a variety of light exposures and can tolerate a good amount of sun. A year-round mulch is recommended.

Plant Matteuccia Ostrich Fern in spring, spacing roots 18 inches apart. Do not plant too deep; set the crowns at or just below soil level.

A native plant, Matteuccia Ostrich Fern is indigenous to North America. Unfortunately, wild ostrich fern populations are now endangered, but you can help ensure their survival by planting some in your own garden. And our nursery propagated plants are only commercially grown, never collected from the wild. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
