Description / Matteucia 'The King'
This large, vigorous fern is cold tolerant, and it spreads with underground runners to quickly fill the ground under your tree canopy. Also known as the "ostrich fern," it can reach three to five feet in height, and with plenty of water, it can reach seven feet. It is deer resistant, and although it prefers
well-drained, loamy soil, it can tolerate a wide range of soil types. Full or partial shade will allow it to thrive with little maintenance. As an ornamental plant, it can be used in floral arrangements and it grows well in containers. In the autumn, the fronds fade to a bright yellow for beautiful winter color. As a native plant in North America, Matteuccia struthiopteris 'The King' is hardy in USDA Zones 2 and up.
