  • Description / Paeonia Mixed Varieties Peony

Plant Paeonia Mixed Varieties Peony bulbs before the first frost in fall, and in spring they flower in a beautiful blend of perfect peony blooms in a mix of interesting forms and gorgeous colors. Each pack is its own unique mix. The flowers rise 24 to 30 inches tall on strong stems and make excellent cuts for spring bouquets and floral displays. In the garden, they attract pollinators, including butterflies and hummingbirds, and sit above bushy mounds of lush, glossy, green summer foliage that turns purplish or golden hues in autumn.

These Paeonia varieties, commonly called peony, are bulbous perennials that have a clumping habit and live for decades, possibly for generations. Charming classic cottage garden plants, peonies are truly spectacular when massed or grouped in a border or mixed bed. But they also make lovely specimen or container plants.

Plant this mix of peony bulbs 12 to 14 inches apart and 1½ to 2 inches deep. Site the bulbs in a sunny to partially shady spot with humus rich, medium moist, free-draining soil, away from trees or shrubs. They don't like to compete for food, and they don't respond well to transplanting, so choose your spot carefully. When the plants begin to grow, feed them with Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food. Peonies are vigorous and low maintenance, once established and grown USDA Zone appropriately (Zones 2-8). They like cold winters and need chilling for bud formation, so they are harder to grow in Zones 8 or higher. Peonies are deer resistant and rabbit resistant.

Peonies are easy to care for, long-lived, classic plants that offer distinct, sweet fragrance and large-petaled pompons of blooms. Peony flowers are popular cut flowers that are long-lasting in bouquets and scent your home with their organic perfume.
