Description / Pycnanthemum Mountain Mint
Mountain Mint is a North American native perennial valued for its clouds of small whitish pink flowers and strongly fragrant foliage. Clusters of two lipped blooms appear from early summer into midsummer, creating a soft display above broad toothed green leaves. When crushed, the foliage releases a refreshing spearmint fragrance that adds another dimension of garden interest from spring through fall.
One of the best perennials for supporting pollinators, Mountain Mint attracts bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and many beneficial insects throughout its bloom period. The leaves and flowers can also be harvested for tea, adding edible appeal to its ornamental value. Named the 2025 Perennial Plant of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association, it performs beautifully in pollinator gardens, naturalized plantings, borders, and mixed perennial beds.
Grow Mountain Mint in full sun to partial shade in moist, well drained soil. Hardy in Zones 4 through 8, plants typically reach 3 to 4 feet tall with a spread of 2 to 3 feet. As a vigorous native perennial, it can slowly spread by rhizomes in favorable conditions. Deer resistance, easy care growth, and outstanding pollinator support make it a valuable addition to sustainable landscapes.
