Description / Rhododendron Coastal Azalea
A native to coastal plain areas from New Jersey and Pennsylvania south to Georgia, this dwarf azalea typically grows to just 2 to 3 feet tall and wide but, in optimal conditions, occasionally reaches 6 feet tall. Blushing white flowers with long graceful stamens bloom in clusters, up to 13 inches long, of 3 to 13 flowers from April to May. The flowers have a strong musky scent.
This loosely branched, deciduous shrub spreads by underground stolons. In the wild, they naturalize and will form dense colonies, particularly in sandy soil; but in the typically heavier soils found in landscapes, they are much less aggressive. In moist, cool locations, it tolerates full sun but prefers dappled sun to open part shade.
