Trillium erectum is a treasured native woodland wildflower that grows to a mature size of about 12 to 18 inches tall. Spring-blooming, the low-growing plant produces upright, unbranched stems, each bearing a whorl of 3 broadly ovate leaves (bracts) crowned with a solitary, three-petaled, nearly purple nodding flower. Berry-like fruits follow the flowers, attracting songbirds.
Trillium erectum, commonly called red trillium or red wake robin, is a hardy rhizomatous perennial (Zones 3-9) that spreads slowly to form a flowering clump that, if left undisturbed, is quite long lived. It's a good trillium for a home garden and is perfect for naturalizing under trees or between shrubs, especially in a shaded woodland garden, pairing perfectly with ferns.
Red trillium grows best in a location that mimics its native habitat: partial to dappled shade with organically rich, medium moist, well-draining soil that has a slightly acidic pH. Full afternoon shade may be beneficial in summer, especially in hot climates. Although red trillium tends to grow naturally in drier habitats within laurel and rhododendron thickets, it needs regular watering and should never be allowed to fully dry out, but it won't tolerate being waterlogged either. However, once red trillium is established, it requires little care or maintenance.

Unfortunately, wild populations of red trilliums are now endangered, but you can help ensure their survival by planting some in your own garden.
