  • Description / Trillium grandiflorum White

Trillium grandiflorum is a beloved native woodland wildflower. Growing to a mature size of about 6 to 12 inches tall and 6 inches wide, this graceful trillium blooms in spring, producing stout, unbranched stems, each bearing a whorl of 3 ovate leaves (bracts) topped with a solitary, outward-facing, terminal flower having 3 large, white, wavy-edged petals, which blush beautifully over time and are buttressed by 3 green sepals.

Trillium grandiflorum, commonly called great white trillium, snow trillium, wood lily, or white wake robin, is a hardy rhizomatous perennial (Zones 3-9) that slowly forms a flowering clump over time. Left undisturbed, it can thrive for many years, making it an excellent choice for home gardens. Ideal for naturalizing, great white trillium is perfect for shaded woodland gardens, where it pairs beautifully with ferns, under trees or between shrubs.

White trillium flourishes in conditions that replicate trillium's native habitat: partial to dappled shade and organically rich, medium moist, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH. Full afternoon shade can be particularly helpful in hotter climates. White trillium naturally occurs in rich woodlands and thickets. It requires consistent moisture and should not be allowed to dry out completely or sit in overly wet soil. Once established, white trillium requires minimal care and maintenance.

For best results, plant Trillium grandiflorum roots in spring, spacing them 12 inches apart and burying them 2 inches deep.

A native to eastern regions of the U.S., Trillium grandiflorum is both beautiful and eco-friendly. Unfortunately, wild populations of great white trilliums are now endangered, but you can help ensure their survival by planting some in your own garden. And our nursery propagated plants are only commercially grown, never collected from the wild. Native plants like this are adapted to the local climate and soil, thriving without the need for additional fertilizers or excessive watering once established. They also naturally control pests, reducing the need for pesticides. Incorporating native plants into your landscape encourages biodiversity, provides vital shelter and food for pollinators and wildlife, and creates a thriving, lively garden.
