Description / 'Affaire' Tulip Bulbs
An amazing new Victory Tulip hybrid, Tulipa 'Affaire' (a cross between Single Early and Darwin Hybrid) is medium-sized with standard bloom time, but the head of the pack for beauty and vigor. The finely cut ivory blooms, edged in vibrant pink-violet that fades into other portions of the petal, provide a breathtaking effect.
This crossing of tulip favorites combines the earlier bloom time of Single Early Tulips and the increased health, stem strength, and bloom size of Darwin Hybrid Tulips. The result is a specimen of exceptional combination of health, vigor, and early season color. Victory hybrids also contain another a key feature setting them apart: the very angular shapes of their blooms. This unique new combination should become another popular characteristic for tulip fans.
Like other tulips, Tulipa 'Affaire' thrives in sun and can adapt to most well-drained soil types, though compacted or heavy clay soils that hold standing water require grit, compost, or soil conditioner. Bren bred for generations in Southern Russia by the Dutch bulb market, 'Affaire' can handle cold winters: these cold-hardy bulbs thrive when they get plenty of chill hours. In warmer zones (7 and 8), Tulips like more shade, with just some morning sun.
Plant 'Affaire' about 8 inches deep, digging the hole a little deeper and add some kitty litter or crushed gravel. This grit will help you achieve the drainage that is vital for tulip beds, and will also deter pests such as rodents, which love to eat the bulbs. Water the bulbs after planting to help them break out of dormancy, but afterwards don't worry about watering; tulips thrive happily in dry conditions.
