Description / Buddleia Pugster White® Butterfly Bush
A Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrub, Buddleia Pugster White® is short, stocky and incredibly cute, growing only about 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. But its flowers are full-sized! Pugster White blooms throughout the summer nonstop and continues to first frost. The large flower spikes are full and dense with crisp white bloomsperfect for a moonlight garden. They're borne on thick, sturdy stems, improving winter survival in its colder climate range. The flowers have a honey-sweet scent and are pollen- and nectar-rich, so they're attractive to pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
A Buddleia davidii, commonly called butterfly bush, Pugster White is a compact shrub with a mounding habit that fits nicely in small-space gardens. If allowed, butterfly bush will self-seed, so consider placement carefully. Pugster White is a perfect specimen or focal point in a small urban garden but still makes quite an impression in a large garden. It also makes an excellent thriller for a mixed container garden. However, this pretty little plant looks its absolute best when massed or grouped in the landscape, and it works especially well in a mixed bed or border or as edging or ground cover.
Butterfly bush is easy to grow and low maintenance. It grows best in sunny spots with a minimum of 8 hours of bright sunlight. Even in warm climates, it should get at least 6 hours of direct sunshine. They also require soil that is well-drained and will perform best if the base of the plant is positioned a bit higher than the ground when planted, creating a small "hill" to encourage water to drain away from the plant, rather than pooling around it. Avoid mulch around the base of the plant. The plant is drought and heat tolerant, deer resistant, and pet friendly. Deadheading the shrub regularly encourages and prolongs flowering and discourages any unwanted self-seeding. Pugster White blooms on new wood, so any desired pruning should be done in in spring, after the new growth appears, with cuts made just above the newly formed buds.
