  • Description / Delosperma Fire Spinner® Ice Plant

Delosperma Fire Spinner® transforms unsightly, barren spots into vibrant displays of color with ease. Perfect for adorning the dry soil next to driveways, brightening sunny borders, or embellishing slopes beyond the reach of your garden hose, this hardy ice plant is a landscaping marvel. Within just two seasons, the Fire Spinner Ice Plant spreads up to 1½ feet wide, creating an eye-catching ground cover that's as functional as it is beautiful.

With needle-like, succulent foliage that maintains a modest height of 1 to 2 inches when not in bloom, this plant bursts into life with the onset of its flowering season. The appearance of its 1½-inch, multicolored flowers elevate the plant's height to about 4 inches, forming a dense, colorful mat. Not only does it add a splash of orange and magenta hues to your garden, but it also effectively suppresses weeds and retains soil moisture, thanks to its tightly packed foliage.

The Delosperma Fire Spinner is incredibly resilient, thriving in the heat and drought of dry climates with minimal water throughout the long summer months. Once its root system is established during the first season, it requires little attention, flourishing even in high humidity and in poor, sandy, or infertile soils. Its versatility extends to container gardening, where it exhibits its charm by spilling over the edges with a cascade of colored flowers.

Originating from a high elevation in South Africa, this plant was introduced to gardeners by Panayoti Kelaidis of the Denver Botanic Gardens. Hardy across various climates, the Ice Plant Fire Spinner embarks on its blooming journey in late spring, continuing into early summer, covering the garden floor with bright orange and magenta blooms, each centered with a dazzling white eye. This plant select addition is particularly resistant to deer, making it an excellent choice for gardens prone to wildlife visits.

Ideal for rock gardens, the Fire Spinner Ice Plant thrives under full sunshine and requires only good drainage to prosper. Its ability to spread easily makes it a prime candidate for covering banks, slopes, and level surfaces alike, bringing life and color to every corner of your garden.

Ice plants are flowering succulents that require little care once established. Due to their low maintenance needs and drought tolerance, delosperma are ideal for planting in xeriscape gardens or areas of the garden where other less hardy plants might struggle.
