  • Description / Hydrangea Starfield™ Bigleaf Hydrangea

Hydrangea Starfield™ is a bigleaf hydrangea from Bloomin' Easy®. This deciduous shrub was bred with busy young homeowners and their modern-sized gardens in mind. It has a naturally diminutive form, reaching only 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, so it fits into small spaces nicely; and it has an easy-care attitude that requires little maintenance. Starfield is one of the heaviest flowering hydrangeas available. Its large, bountiful double blooms are a lovely shade of bright pink in neutral soil but will be blue to mauve in soil with an acidic pH. The mopheads bloom and rebloom all summer and make perfect fresh or dried cut flowers.

A Hydrangea macrophylla, commonly called bigleaf hydrangea, Starfield has a rounded, mounding, vigorous growth habit and a moderate growth rate. Freely branching, it has strong, thick, sturdy stems. The stems are hollow and make excellent nesting habitats for bees throughout winter. Use Starfield has a specimen in the garden or a patio pot, or plant it in groups or masses in mixed beds and borders.

Hydrangea is a shade-friendly shrub that grows and flowers best with at least 3 to 4 hours of full sun a day; morning sun is best, with dappled shade for the rest of the day. It prefers rich, moist, well-draining soil and consistent watering (at least once a week), especially in warmer weather. It grows well in Zones 5-8 and can handle temperatures as low as -20°F (-29°C).

Hydrangea macrophylla change color with the pH of the soil, turning pink in alkaline soil and blue in acid soils.
