Aquilegia / Columbine is a hardy perennial, unafraid of ferociously cold winters, dry summers, and nibbling deer. Thriving in full sun and any well-drained soil, Aquilegia can even tolerate a bit of shade in the south and southwest. The graceful blooms appear in early to mid-spring, drawing in hummingbirds and proving long-lasting in vases. Drought tolerant once established, Aquilegia provides year-round interest, as the foliage turns a lovely maroon in the fall and remains attractive when not in bloom.
