  • Description / Allium Miami Ornamental Onion Bulbs

Plant Allium Miami ornamental onion bulbs before the first frost in fall; and early the next summer, large, sphery flower heads packed with dark red-purple florets perk up the garden atop leafless scapes rising 32 to 36 inches above a basal rosette of strappy leaves. Rich in nectar, this early summer-bloomer bridges the gap between spring blooms and summer perennials, sustaining many types of pollinators, including the bees and butterflies we all love. The flowers have a sweet scent and make stylish summer bouquets. Left in the garden, the seed heads remain attractive for months, creating long-lasting displays in the garden.

An Allium aflatunense species, commonly called ornamental onion or Persian onion, Miami is a bulbous perennial with an upright habit. Alliums are in the same family as many familiar edible plants, such as garlic, onions, chives, and shallots; but ornamental alliums add an interesting architectural element to the garden with their pompom blooms on tall, naked scapes. Miami naturalizes easily once established, with bulbs multiplying and plants getting more numerous each year. Plant these beauties in spectacular sweeping drifts, cluster them in flower beds, weave them through the back of borders, or place them in deep patio pots. They make gorgeous layered lasagna plantings with muscari and anemones.

Plant Miami allium bulbs 8 inches apart and 5 inches deep and water well to settle bulbs. When growth appears, fertilize them with organic bulb food. Site bulbs in sheltered spots with plenty of sunshine and soil that is medium moist and well-draining. Miami bulbs tolerate poor soil but waterlogged soils will cause bulbs to rot. If flower production decreases over time with overcrowding, dig up the bulbs, divide, and replant them. Ornamental onions are deer resistant and rodent resistant, and Miami is cold hardy to Zone 3.
