  • Description / Anemone Darkest Blue Windflower Bulbs

Plant Anemone Darkest Blue windflower bulbs before the first frost in fall, and early the next summer, they produce compact plants with finely cut foliage and an abundance of large, poppy-like blue blooms with a central boss of black stamens. Borne on long flower stems rising 12 and 18 inches tall, the bold blooms make incredibly charming and long-lasting cut flowers for early-summer bouquets. Left in the garden, the blue-hued blooms bring in a bevy of bees and butterflies.

Anemone coronaria 'Mr. Fokker', commonly called windflower, is a small tuberous perennial with a low-growing, mounding habit. Windflowers are a great choice for ground cover in woodland and rock gardens and are perfect for planting in pretty patio pots. They're ideal for clustering in flower beds and borders, planting in drifts around trees and shrubs, or layering in a lasagna planting with grape hyacinths and alliums, in garden or containers. The bulbs can also be forced indoors for early spring displays in the home.

A Mediterranean sun-lover, anemones must be planted in a sun-soaked spot. Some afternoon shade may be beneficial, especially in the hottest climates. Anemones aren't too fussy about the soil they're planted in, but they grow best in medium moist soil with a slightly acidic pH. But soil must drain freely. Waterlogged soil can cause bulbs to rot. Before planting these lovely little bulbs, soak them in lukewarm water overnight to jump start development. Plant Darkest Blue anemone bulbs 3 to 6 inches apart and 2 to 3 inches deep. Or for a massive sweep of blooms, plant about 16 bulbs per square foot. Once growth begins, fertilize the bulbs with a specialized bulb food. Windflowers are deer resistant.
