Cercis 'Alley Cat' Redbud

Cercis 'Alley Cat' is a deciduous understory tree grown for its lovely architecture, profusion of colorful flowers, and extraordinary variegated foliage. This tree puts on an extravagant show in spring, flowering in showy clusters of charming pea-like rich-pink flowers on bare branches, before the foliage emerges. The nectar- and pollen-rich flowers are a food source for pollinators, including bees and early season butterflies. Dry, flattened, bean-like seedpods follow in mid to late summer and sustain several species of songbirds throughout fall and winter. Its graceful canopy of large, heart-shaped leaves appears after the flowers and emerges in copper pink and soft green hues before developing attractive white splashes and speckles as they mature. The leaves neither revert to green nor scorch in sun.

A Cercis canadensis species, commonly called eastern redbud trees, 'Alley Cat' has a moderate growth rate and an upright habit, reaching a mature size of 20 to 30 feet tall and 25 to 35 feet wide. Redbud trees are perfect specimen, shade, and patio trees. They are great additions to beds and borders but are especially eye-catching in group plantings in the landscape.

Easy to grow and low maintenance redbud trees grow best in sunny to partly shady locations with moderately fertile, moist, well-draining soil; but they tolerate most soils, including loam, sand, and clay. Although best flowering is in full sun, some shade may be required for the best overall performance in hot climates. Adding mulch around the tree's base will help keep roots moist and cool in extreme temperatures. Redbud trees require little to no pruning, but any desired pruning for shape should be done in late spring, after blooming is complete. Cercis 'Alley Cat' is pest and deer resistant.
