  • Description / Iris Struck Twice Reblooming Bearded Iris

The American Iris Society Honorable Mention 2012

Iris Struck Twice is a tall reblooming bearded iris that rises to about 3 feet tall and blooms mid-spring to early summer and again in early fall. The multicolor blooms are simply stunning with creamy standards that blush pink and beautifully blend into velvety salmon pink falls. Large and fan shaped, they have prettily ruffled petals and Mandarin red beards, adding the perfect accent. Borne on tall, sturdy stems rising above sword-shaped blue-green leaves, the blooms attract pollinators to the garden, including butterflies, and make impressive cut flowers.

As an Iris germanica cultivar, Struck Twice is a rhizomatous semievergreen perennial that multiplies each year and has an upright, clumping habit. Iris Struck Twice is shown to best effect when planted in groups in mixed beds and borders or in large drifts in foundation plantings.

Bearded irises have a naturally hardy nature, making them easy to grow and low maintenance. They grow best in sunny to partially shady locations with 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight and thrive in almost any good garden soil, as long as it's well-draining, but they prefer soils with a neutral to slightly acidic pH between 6.1 and 7.2. Keep them moist, but not soggy. Consistently wet feet may cause root rot. Bearded irises are drought and heat tolerant once established and also deer and rabbit resistant.

Tall bearded reblooming irises are bred to have a second bloom, but that is dependent on the location and growing conditions being favorable. Apply Espoma® Flower-tone® about 6 weeks before bloom time in both early spring and midsummer to promote a healthy bloom cycle.
